A guide to Pune's district, family and consumer courts

If you've never had to deal with a court matter before, even knowing where to go can feel like the first obstacle. Here's a straightforward guide to the three courts most people in Pune end up dealing with.

District & Sessions Court, Shivajinagar

This is Pune's principal court for civil and criminal matters of significant value or seriousness, located in Shivajinagar.

What's heard here

It handles serious criminal trials, civil appeals, and a wide range of civil litigation that exceeds the jurisdiction of lower courts. If you're dealing with a criminal case, a civil appeal, or a substantial recovery suit, this is likely where your matter will be heard.

Family Court, Shivajinagar

Also located in Shivajinagar, the Family Court handles matrimonial matters specifically — divorce (both mutual consent and contested), child custody, maintenance, and related disputes. It's set up to handle these matters with a degree of privacy and a less adversarial process than ordinary civil court, including provisions for counselling and mediation before a case proceeds to a full hearing.

Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Bibwewadi

This is where consumer complaints are filed — disputes over defective products, denied services, builder issues, and similar matters. It's designed to be more accessible than ordinary civil litigation, with simpler procedures and generally faster timelines, though this varies by case load and complexity.

What to expect on your first visit

  • Carry originals and copies of key documents. Whatever's relevant to your matter — agreements, notices, identification.
  • Expect to wait. Court schedules run on lists, and your matter may be called later than expected.
  • Dress and conduct yourself formally. Courts are formal environments, even for routine hearings.
  • Bring your lawyer's contact details and case reference. Useful if you need to follow up on anything during the visit.
Most first-time visitors are more anxious about the unfamiliarity of court than the actual proceedings — a short briefing beforehand from your lawyer usually settles that.
